The Banded Killifish is a hardy and adaptable species known for its sleek body and distinctive horizontal stripes. Native to freshwater and brackish habitats across North America, these fish are versatile and easy to care for, making them an excellent choice for beginner aquarists.

A minimum tank size of 20 gallons (75 liters) is recommended to accommodate their active swimming behavior and schooling nature. Larger tanks are ideal for keeping groups or mixing with other species. The aquarium should be well-decorated with aquatic plants like Vallisneria or Java fern, driftwood, and rocks to mimic their natural environment while leaving open spaces for swimming.

Optimal water conditions include a pH of 6.5-8.0, a temperature range of 68-75°F (20-24°C), and water hardness of 5-15 dGH. Although primarily a freshwater species, the Banded Killifish can tolerate slightly brackish conditions with salinity up to 1.005 SG.

These fish are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet. They enjoy high-quality flakes, live or frozen insects, small crustaceans, and algae. Feeding should occur at the surface or mid-level, as they are naturally surface-oriented feeders.

Banded Killifish are peaceful and prefer to be kept in groups of six or more to reduce stress and exhibit natural schooling behaviors. A stocking ratio of 1 male to 2 females is suggested for maintaining harmony within the group. Breeding in captivity is achievable with a dedicated tank featuring fine-leaved plants or spawning mops where eggs can be deposited. The eggs hatch within 1-2 weeks, and the fry can be raised on infusoria or finely crushed flakes.

With a lifespan of 3-4 years, Banded Killifish are relatively robust and adaptable. Regular water changes and a stable environment are key to their longevity. Their peaceful demeanor makes them suitable for community tanks with other similarly sized, non-aggressive species.

Their striking bands and active schooling behavior make the Banded Killifish a fascinating addition to both freshwater and brackish aquariums. They are not only aesthetically pleasing but also contribute to a dynamic and engaging tank environment.
